A blood pressure measurement compares the amount of blood your heart pumps to the blood pushing through your blood vessels. If you have health conditions such as plaque buildup in your vessels, your blood pressure may increase, and this could result in serious complications such as an increased risk for heart attack. If you have high blood pressure, sometimes referred to as HBP, your doctor will recommend ways to lower your reading, and this may include supplements such as fish oil.
Fish Oil
Fish oil, typically derived from fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and cod liver, contains omega-3's, essential fatty acids believed to have a variety of benefits to your health. In 2002, research analysts at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands examined the findings of 90 trials involving the use of fish oil for reducing blood pressure. Based on the results of these studies, the university analysts determined that taking fish oil in high doses does have a beneficial effect on blood pressure.
Intake
Although the analysts reviewing fish oil and blood pressure studies state that high doses of fish oil may reduce blood pressure measurements, you should not take fish oil supplements without first talking to your doctor. The omega-3 found in fish oil may interfere with medications such as blood thinners and put you at risk for serious complications. Also, the supplements could affect certain medical conditions.
If your doctor believes fish oil may provide the treatment you need to reduce blood pressure, she will recommend that you eat a certain amount of fish or she will recommend a supplement and dosage appropriate for your medical condition. The amount you need will depend on factors such as the medications and additional supplements you may take.
Other Help
Your doctor may recommend that you make changes to your diet such as increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables, low-fat foods and whole grains. You may also need to reduce your salt intake and increase your activity level. Stress and smoking may also contribute to high blood pressure.
If you do not see an improvement in blood pressure based on lifestyle changes recommended by your doctor, or if you have seriously high readings, your doctor may prescribe medication to help control your condition.
Considerations
Symptoms of high blood pressure include headaches and dizziness, but many people do not experience outward symptoms of the condition. If you suspect that you have HBP, talk to your doctor. She will measure your blood pressure and determine any necessary treatment. You should not begin taking fish oil or any other supplements unless directed by your doctor.
