A Diet for People With Gallbladder Problems

A gallbladder is a small sac-shaped organ located on the underside of the liver. Its main function is to store the bile produced by the liver. Bile helps in the digestion of dietary fats. When the gallbladder is diseased or removed, the body is not able to metabolize fats properly. This not only affects digestion, it also affects the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, or vitamins stored in the body. One of the ways to reduce the symptoms of gallbladder problems is to eat a healthy diet.

Nutrient-Rich Diet

When you have gallbladder problems, you should consume foods that are high in vitamins – especially vitamins A, B group, C and E. Foods such as whole grains, squash, bell peppers and green leafy vegetables are rich in group B vitamins. Consume fresh fruits such as tomatoes, blueberries, cherries, pineapples and oranges, as they are rich in antioxidants, which may help prevent disease, as well as minerals such as magnesium, zinc, calcium and selenium. Include larger quantities of these fruits in your diet than you normally would. Additionally, consume more fiber-rich foods including fruits and vegetables and whole grains. If you are not getting fiber naturally, discuss fiber supplements with your doctor.

Foods to Avoid

If you have food allergies or intolerances, avoid the foods that cause discomfort as they may also irritate your gallbladder. Eggs, especially, may irritate the gallbladder. Your health care provider may test you for food allergies. Some of the foods that may also cause problems include soy products like tofu, soybeans and soy milk. Other foods that may cause allergic reactions include peanuts, shellfish and other kinds of fish. If you have lactose intolerance, avoid consuming dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream.

Foods to Eliminate

Do not consume any refined foods like white breads and refined flours. Also avoid processed foods that have added chemicals like preservatives and colors. Eliminate red meats from your diet and consume only white meat or leaner cuts. Also eliminate trans fats from your diet. Processed foods such as cookies, cakes, chips, donuts, margarine and fast foods like onion rings and French fries are rich in trans fats.

Considerations

Make healthy substitutions for cooking oils and fats. Use flaxseed oil or olive oil instead of other vegetable oils. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Also cut down on your daily caffeine intake to reduce the risk of gallstones. Apart from making changes to your diet, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly can also help you reduce symptoms caused due to gallbladder problems. According to University of Maryland Medical Center, certain herbs or herbal supplements can help manage symptoms of gallbladder problems. Green teas, milk thistle, turmeric and artichoke are some of the herbs that can help.
