Often accompanied with salt, pepper or ketchup, French fries can be made in a variety of ways with a number of toppings and seasonings, but are often overloaded with fat due to the frying process. Baking French fries considerably lowers caloric and fat content while still retaining the delicious texture and taste of traditional fries. Cooked in dry heat, one serving of French fries contains roughly 166 calories, 5 grams of fat and 27 grams of carbohydrates.
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 375 F.
Step 2
Rinse 5 large potatoes under running water, scrubbing the skins gently to remove any dirt or debris.
Step 3
Slice the potatoes to your preference. Five large potatoes should yield at least 45 thin strips.
Step 4
Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Place potato strips onto a baking sheet. Drizzle 1/4 cup of olive oil, 1/2 of a minced garlic clove, and 1/2 tsp. of kosher salt over your potato strips.
Step 5
Use clean hands to lightly toss the potato strips into the oil and seasonings. Avoid mushing, or damaging the shape of the strips.
Step 6
Arrange the potato strips into rows. Avoid overcrowding the pan by placing each strip well enough apart that they do not touch one another.
Step 7
Bake for 15 minutes and lightly turn the strips. Continue baking for another 20 minutes, or until the potato strips are golden brown in color.
Step 8
Serve the french fries with ketchup on the side and enjoy.
Tips and Warnings
- Broil the potato strips for an additional 2 minutes in the oven for a more golden brown color.
