Bed bugs, a common household pest in American homes before World War II, are back in North America with a vengeance. The tiny bugs live primarily in mattresses, couch cushions and other soft-padded materials, but can exist in almost any dark corner, including in your exercise equipment. Clean your equipment regularly and thoroughly to prevent bed bugs from lurking and biting.
Step 1
Wipe down exercise equipment daily to prevent bed bug transmission from clothing or towels. Use disinfecting wipes or a spray bottle solution made from half bleach and half hot water. Bed bugs cannot survive temperatures higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2
Remove seat covers and other washable padded material from exercise equipment and wash it in a hot cycle on a regular basis. The hot water -- at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit -- kills any existing bed bugs and prevents further infestation.
Step 3
Vacuum exercise equipment, using a small attachment to remove debris from cracks and crevices. Bed bugs make their homes in small areas of hard furniture as well as in upholstered areas. A combination of vacuuming and wet washing through wipes or spray bottles can remove mature adults and unhatched eggs.
Step 4
Repair cracks or rips in padding on exercise equipment to prevent bed bug infestations. Tape, sew or replace holes in soft material as part of your regular maintenance and cleaning.
Tips and Warnings
- Refrain from hanging sweat-filled, dirty towels on or near your exercise bike or other equipment. Beg bugs can transfer easily between the two structures. Wash all exercise clothing and used towels in hot water daily to reduce your risk of infestation.
