If eating too much wheat germ causes a burning sensation in your body, you need to make an appointment with your doctor. Wheat germ is a portion of wheat that is high in fiber, protein and a good source of vitamins and minerals. If you develop a burning sensation after consuming wheat germ you may have heartburn, a peptic ulcer or an upset stomach as a result from the increased fiber.

Heartburn

Heartburn commonly occurs from over-eating. Eating foods that are high in fiber may also trigger heartburn in some people who are more prone to the symptom. Heartburn occurs when stomach fluids enter the esophagus, causing irritation to the soft tissue in the esophagus. Heartburn typically causes a burning sensation in the middle of the chest, behind the breastbone, according to MayoClinic.com. The burning pain will typically get worse if you lie down or bend over. Between your esophagus and your stomach is a flat muscle, called the sphincter, which keeps stomach acids out of the esophagus. If the sphincter opens or doesn’t close fully, you will experience heartburn.

Gastric Ulcer

According to FamilyDoctor.org, a burning sensation, along with pain may be felt after eating if you have gastric ulcer. A gastric ulcer is an open wound that develops in the lining of your stomach. The open sore can cause pain, internal bleeding and abdominal discomfort shortly after eating wheat germ. Most gastric ulcers are the result of a bacterial infection from H. pylori but may also develop from the abuse of alcohol, smoking or the daily use of certain pain relievers. If you notice blood in your stool, along with a burning sensation in your stomach, call your doctor immediately.

Upset Stomach From Fiber

Eating too much fiber in one sitting can cause an upset stomach with a burning sensation. Fiber is the portion of the wheat germ that the body cannot digest, but helps add bulk to your stools, making them easier to pass. MedlinePlus recommends eating between 20 and 35 g of fiber daily, but increasing the amount of fiber you consume quickly can cause stomach pain, bloating, gas and diarrhea. A single, 3-tbsp. serving of wheat germ contains 2 g of fiber. In order to prevent these symptoms, increase your daily fiber intake slowly.

Consideration

A burning sensation may be related to another condition that will need to be evaluated by your doctor. Wheat germ contains gluten, which can cause systemic reactions throughout the body. Stop eating wheat germ until you can be seen by your health care provider.
