The Air Climber is a simple exercise machine designed to mimic the movement of climbing stairs. It elevates the feet on two pedals that move up and down and provides you with the opportunity to work out your arms with resistance bands that can be connected to the base of the machine.
Background
According to the Air Climber website, the step machine was developed by U.S. Aerobic champion Brenda DyGraf. DyGraf is a fitness expert who's starred in a number of exercise videos and wanted to develop a product that would provide an effective aerobic workout through low-impact methods that wouldn't harm people's joints.
Features
The Air Climber machine uses what DyGraf terms "air power technology." Each step on the machine causes flowing air to travel from one pedal to the other, reducing impact on your joints and helping to lift the legs so that the continued stair-climbing movements don't feel as difficult as they might on a real flight of stairs.
Components
The Air Climber workout system as well as several other components come with the exercise machine. According to the official website, a sample "air express" workout, a "burn and firm" workout, three cardio workouts, one abdominal workout, a suggested meal plan, a body resistance cord, a training guide, a digital exercise aid and a 10-day weight loss plan are also included with the price of the machine, which cost around $100 as of late 2010.
Variations
Stepping on the Air Climber and using it to simulate stair climbing can be beneficial for leg muscles, glutes, thighs and the lower back. Adding resistance bands to the machine can also work the arms. However, although the machine comes with several suggested exercise plans, its scope is somewhat limited, and it provides more cardiovascular stimulation than strength or flexibility training. Holding dumbbells while using the Air Climber may help with toning and building muscle.
Considerations
Using the Air Climber regularly can burn calories and help with weight loss, although it doesn't constitute a complete fitness plan. According to the American Council on Exercise, incorporating cardio activity as well as flexibility and strength training is necessary for weight loss. MedlinePlus also notes that the only safe, reliable and effective long-term weight loss method is to combine regular exercise with balanced, healthy, low-calorie eating that features whole, natural foods and includes items from every major food group.
