When you play ball hockey in a gym or an outdoor roller hockey rink, you will have the opportunity to defeat the opposing goalie with a series of moves when you go in on a breakaway. When you take the puck in alone, it is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one. You are trying to figure out how to defeat the goalie and he's trying figure out what move you will make.
Backhand Off A Deke
One of the classic breakaway moves in hockey is the backhand shot to the roof of the net off the forehand fake. As you move toward the net, you are stickhandling the ball and going from forehand to backhand. Once you get inside 10 feet, fake the forehand and move the puck to your backhand and quickly fire it to the roof of the net.
Forehand to Far Side
As you go towards the net, stickhandle between your forehand and backhand side. As you get between the faceoff circles, angle towards your dominant side. If you are right-handed, you will move to the right, and you will go towards the left if you are left-handed. The goalie will move with you to cut off the short side of the net. Just as he moves to cut that shot off, fire a forehand shot to the long side. You should be able to hit the open side.
Forehand To The Five-Hole
As you go in alone on the goaltender, move towards your backhand side and try to sell the backhand shot. As you get to the top of the faceoff circles, cut hard to your forehand. As soon as the goalie moves to stay with you, he will open up his legs and leave you with an opening. Quickly fire the puck into this spot -- known as five-hole in hockey -- for a sure goal.
Full Speed Quick Wrister
In most cases on the breakaway, you will try to stickhandle the puck and put together an array of moves that force the goaltender to stick with you and try to counter. However, you may also be able to take advantage of your own speed and accuracy. Instead of moving the puck back and forth between your forehand and backhand, drive hard and fast to the net and fire a hard, quick forehand shot to the near corner. The goaltender may not be quick enough to stop this shot if he is preparing to stop your moves.
