The HCG diet is based on the published findings of Dr. A.T. W. Simeons and appears in his book “Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity.” The diet's users must combine their carefully controlled menu with regulated doses of HCG supplements, which can either be administered through injection or oral homeopathic drops. Strenuous exercise is not encouraged on the diet. However certain exercises are allowed, depending on which of the diet’s three phases you are in. HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone produced during pregnancy.
The Loading Phase
The loading phase is the first stage of the HCG diet and lasts for 48 hours. Dieters have the most freedom at this stage because they are allowed to eat as much of what they want. Preference is given to high calorie foods such as fried chicken, avocado, chocolates and pizza. Because of the high calorie allowance there is no restriction on exercise activity for this phase. Dieters can engage in moderate aerobic activity like walking or cycling on level ground, as well as intense cardio routines such as jogging, running or swimming.
Maintenance Phase
The maintenance phase is the second stage of the HCG diet and lasts for 21 to 40 days depending on your weight loss goals. Exercising during the maintenance phase is not recommended. During the maintenance phase dieters are allowed only 500 calories daily. Exercising can therefore strain your energy reserves, causing your body to slow down and hold onto fat, instead of burning it off. Dieters who, however, feel the inclination to exercise are encouraged to restrain their exercise routine to 15 minutes of moderate aerobic activity like walking or gardening.
The Stabilization Phase
The stabilization phase is the third and final stage of the HCG diet. It lasts for 21 day. During this period, the daily calorie intake is increased to 1,000 calories for men and 800 calories for women. You are allowed to resume strength training exercises at this point. You can also spend 30 minutes engaged in moderate aerobic activity like walking, yoga or dancing.
Safety Considerations
Like every other diet, you are encouraged to seek the counsel of your doctor before proceeding with the HCG diet. According to MayoClinic.com, users of the HCG diet stand the risk of experiencing side effects such as headaches, fatigue, irritability and gallstones. Your doctor will be able to determine if you are a fit candidate for the caloric restriction of the diet or the use of HCG supplements.
