The nutritional value of salmon varies according to type and the way you choose to cook it. While farm-raised and fresh-caught wild salmon rank higher in omega-3 fatty acids and protein, and much lower in sodium than processed varieties, preserving good nutrition means choosing the right cooking method and additional ingredients. Cooking salmon by frying it in the oven may not be a first thought, but can be a healthy and easy way to get dinner on the table in a hurry.

Step 1

Crush 1 cup of flavored croutons for up to 4 salmon steaks, each about 1 inch thick, or add about 3/4 cup of flavored breadcrumbs to a shallow plate. Mix in the Parmesan cheese, minced garlic and chopped parsley.

Step 2

Baste each salmon steak with ½ teaspoon of olive oil to ensure the crumb coating sticks to the fish. Basting is not necessary, however, if you marinate the salmon in an oil-based marinade before frying it in your oven.

Step 3

Dredge the steaks in the crumb mixture to coat both sides evenly and then transfer the steaks with tongs to a greased, shallow baking pan.

Step 4

Baste the top of each salmon steak with ½ tablespoon of olive oil to ensure your fish gets a crusty brown exterior.

Step 5

Fry the salmon steaks in your oven at 500 degrees Fahrenheit for 7 minutes. Turn the fish with tongs, baste and continue to oven fry the salmon steaks for another 7 minutes or until the fish flakes easily when you run a fork across its top.

Tips and Warnings

  • Marinating salmon steaks for up to 30 minutes before frying them in your oven can be a tasty flavoring option. Combine 1/3 to 1/2 cup of olive oil, 2 tbsp. of lemon juice and 1 to 2 tbsp. of minced garlic in a mixing bowl. Pour the oil marinade over the salmon steaks and turn the steaks with tongs to coat both sides of the steaks evenly. Cover and refrigerate the salmon steaks for up to 30 minutes in your refrigerator.
