Long and Lean Yoga is one of Baron Baptiste's yoga routines. Yoga is primarily recognized as a mind-body conditioning exercise rather than an athletic fitness method. Power yoga is a physically-charged form of yoga and results in burning calories to an acceptable level for a weight-loss program. Ultimately practicing yoga can result in a renewed sense of well-being that nurtures positive changes mentally and physically.

Long and Lean Yoga

Long and Lean Yoga is a power yoga program. Power yoga emphasizes strength and flexibility in the poses while focusing on the breath. The sequence of poses varies according to the teacher. Baptiste's routines are based on a heat-based vinyasa, which is a breath-synchronized movement, flow form of power yoga. The Long and Lean routine is paced slowly, with poses lasting several minutes.

Power Yoga and Calorie Burn

How many calories are burned with any yoga class depends on the intensity of the yoga and the strength and weight of the person. The more you weigh, the more calories are burned. Baptiste's power yoga routines have roots in ashtanga and Bikram yoga, more intense and aerobic forms of yoga than others. Linking breath and movements in a continuous flow generates heat, promoting calorie burn. In terms of calories, power yoga compares favorably with other mild aerobic exercises.

Calorie Count

A person weighing about 130 lbs. can burn 414 calories in an hour of power yoga. In other words about 3.18 calories are burned per pound of weight. More calories are burned in activities such as running -- the same 130-lb. person will burn 945 calories running at a six-minute-mile pace for an hour. Practice a power-yoga routine, such as Long and Lean Yoga, three times a week for 90 minutes a session to burn the number of calories necessary for weight loss.

Yoga and Weight Loss

Yoga has an impact on the physical form beyond weight loss. Toning the muscles removes inches from the frame, and can result in dropping a clothes size without losing any pounds. It also increases strength and flexibility. There is little research on the link between yoga and weight loss. But as a mind-body exercise, a regular yoga practice can have transformative effects for the student and that's reflected in an improved relationship with the body.
