Snowboarding is a sport that requires good balance and muscle control to stay upright as you coast down the hill. Another element that sometimes trips up even experienced snowboarders is riding the t-bar back to the top of the hill. Unlike a standard chair lift, the t-bar is really just a bar that is more designed for skiers than snowboarders and may cause you problems if you don’t use the proper technique.

Step 1

Position yourself in front of the T-bar as it approaches, with your feet strapped into your board.

Step 2

Grasp the vertical handle of the T-bar as it reaches you, and lean back slightly to squat on one side of the horizontal bar.

Step 3

Ride the T-bar up the hill, keeping your snowboard in contact with the snow as you travel up the hill.

Step 4

Stand up and release the vertical bar as you reach the top of the hill, sliding away as if exiting a regular chair lift.

Tips and Warnings

  • Remove your rear foot from its binding and place it on the anti-slip pad if you don’t feel comfortable with both feet strapped in. Don’t hang onto the back of the T-bar like you’re water skiing and don’t ride up with the bar between your legs.
