Inviting your child into the kitchen from an early age helps him learn the basics of cooking, kitchen safety and nutrition. Even toddlers are able to tackle simple kitchen tasks like pouring ingredients into a bowl or stirring. As your child gets older, you are able to introduce more complex skills like reading recipes, slicing food and using the stove with supervision. Emphasize kitchen safety rules and age-appropriate tasks to prevent injuries while cooking with your child.

Step 1

Demonstrate how to properly use basic kitchen utensils like a whisk, rubber spatula and measuring utensils. Let your child practice while you prepare food. Around age 10 to 12, your child may be old enough to learn to use sharp knives depending on her maturity level, ability to follow the kitchen safety rules and coordination.

Step 2

Provide your child with a cookbook with pictures or a collection of child-friendly recipes. Allow him to pick a recipe to try with your help.

Step 3

Write a list of ingredients needed with your child so she sees the entire process of cooking. Shop together to buy the necessary ingredients.

Step 4

Read through each recipe your child prepares with him before you start cooking. This teaches him the importance of reviewing all of the steps first so you don't make a mistake. Help him collect all of the necessary ingredients and kitchen tools before beginning the recipe.

Step 5

Help your child with measurements and use of various kitchen tools as needed. Avoid taking over the project.

Step 6

Supervise your child as she follows the recipe or prepares the food dish. Offer tips if she has difficulty with different aspects of the cooking process. Explain different techniques or the use of different ingredients. For example, when baking, teach her that the baking soda helps baked goods rise.

Step 7

Prepare more complex recipes with your child as he becomes proficient in the kitchen. Encourage him to continue practicing with different cooking implements and techniques to improve his skills.
