Most people have their favorite cut of steak, and the rib-eye is one of the most popular because of the amount of flavor and tenderness present in the meat. The rib-eye steak is a cut of beef that comes from the rib section of a cow, and is a boneless version of a rib steak. Rib-eyes are most commonly prepared on the grill, and cooking the rib-eye to well done will remove all of the pink, with the time needing to cook varying on the thickness of the steak.

Step 1

Prepare the steak by using the marinade or dry rub of your choosing. Some marinades require 24 hours to fully take effect, while many people prefer some spices rubbed into the meat right before you put the rib-eye on the grill. Ten to 15 minutes before you are ready to cook the steak, turn on your grill so that the grate is searing hot when you are ready to cook.

Step 2

Place the rib-eye on the hottest part of the grill and sear one side for about two minutes with the lid closed. Once one side is seared, carefully turn the rib-eye over with a pair of tongs and sear the other side for two more minutes. After both sides of the steak are seared, slide the rib-eye to a cooler part of the grill to finish cooking.

Step 3

Cook the steak for an additional two to four minutes per side, for a total cooking time of eight to 12 minutes. If your rib-eye is 1 inch thick, the total cooking time will be closer to eight or nine minutes, while a 1.5-inch steak could take up to 12 minutes.

Step 4

Check the center of the steak with a meat thermometer. The USDA recommends a minimum internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit for steaks, but a well-done steak should be close to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. When you're looking at a well-done steak, the center will have no pink and will be uniformly brownish gray throughout.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use tongs to flip the steak so you do not puncture the meat and let out the juices.
