One of the most important skills you can learn on a snowboard is how to stop. If you’re unable to slow your board when necessary, you risk injury to yourself and others on the hill. Seasoned snowboarders make stopping look easy, but you must use the proper balance and technique to get the feel for it and stop properly every time. Practice your technique until you feel comfortable before getting out on a real hill.
Step 1
Snowboard down the hill normally and bend your knees slightly. Slide your back foot forward so the board turns 90 degrees to a horizontal position in relation to the hill and your toes point forward.
Step 2
Lean back slightly on your heels and look down the hill, keeping your arms out for balance. Tip the toe side edge of the board up slightly.
Step 3
Dig the heel edge of the board into the snow so it slows your momentum and helps you stop.
Tips and Warnings
- Stopping on the heel side is the most common way, but you also can stop on your toe side, if you wish. Lift your heels up and dig your toe side edge into the snow with your back to the bottom of the hill to stop on the toe side. Practice your stopping on the smallest hills until you have a feel for the motion and how your board should feel under you.
