While the commercials may sound promising, no scientific evidence has yet demonstrated that toning shoes can actually increase the number of calories you burn, according to Dr. Edward Laskowski, an expert writing for MayoClinic.com. In fact, some toning shoes are not designed for aerobic activity and may harm your feet if you use them for running. However, if toning shoes encourage you to exercise, they may contribute to weight loss because the key to losing weight is burning more calories than you consume, and this can only be accomplished through diet and increased activity, particularly aerobic exercise.
Step 1
Perform moderately intense aerobic exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. Aerobic activities include brisk walking, running, biking, swimming, dancing, organized sports or martial arts.
Step 2
Choose toning shoes that are appropriate for aerobic activity, especially if you plan to run. Some toning shoes are designed only for walking; these should not be used for aerobic exercise.
Step 3
Increase your overall activity throughout the day. Wear your toning shoes for a walk at the mall. Walk to work or the grocery store; if that isn't possible, park further away than you normally do. Go for a walk in your toning shoes with your family or pets instead of watching TV. The more you move, the more calories you burn and the more weight you lose.
Step 4
Decrease your caloric consumption. One pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, so if you increase the calories you burn daily by 250 to 500 and decrease the amount you consume by 250 to 500, you will lose 1 to 2 pounds per week, which is generally considered a healthy rate.
Step 5
Eat more lean protein, fresh vegetables and whole grains. Eliminate saturated fats, refined carbohydrates and high-sodium foods from your diet. Consume foods that are high in fiber and essential nutrients. Drink plenty of water.
Step 6
Make smart choices when it comes to food. Substitute lower-calorie options whenever possible, such as skim milk instead of whole, or have fruit for dessert, for example. Give yourself smaller portions, and eat small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism churning. Eliminate empty calories such as soda or snack foods.
Step 7
Set yourself up to succeed. You won't stick with your plan if you don't enjoy it, so eat things that taste good to you and perform exercises that you like. Vary your routine regularly to keep from getting bored. Exercise and dine with family or friends to stay motivated. Give yourself little indulgences every now and then. Look at your new toning shoes as motivation to work hard -- not as an easy, magical solution.
