Probiotics are a good type of bacteria that are used for overall wellness of the digestive system. Many people take probiotics when prescribed antibiotics. This allows the replenishment of good bacteria in the gut. When probiotics are ingested, they can potentially cause side effects in other parts of the body. One concern is if probiotics can cause the heart to flutter.
Probiotics
Probiotics are live microorganisms. They are usually a type of bacteria that resembles the good bacteria found in the human body. Many people use probiotics to prevent infections and certain illnesses. There are different types of probiotics, each of a different bacteria strain. Consult your physician on which, if any, probiotics you should be consuming. They can be found in food, such as yogurt, or as a supplement.
Heart Flutter
The heart's rhythm is controlled by the electrical system of the heart. Each beat starts in the upper chambers of your heart at the sinoatrial node. The signal then travels down to the atrioventricular node and into the bottom chambers of the heart. When the heart is irritated for any reason, the signal may start from other areas of the heart. This can cause the heart to flutter. When the heart is fluttering it is not efficiently getting enough blood to the rest of the body. This eventually can lead to atrial fibrillation.
Probiotics and Flutter
Probiotic use is not associated with serious side effects. The most common side effects are digestive issues such as bloating or gas. There are no documented side effects on the heart unless related to an allergic reaction. Abnormal heart rhythms have been reported when there is a dairy allergy due to some dairy content in the supplement. If you experience any heart flutter, you should seek medical attention.
Concerns and Considerations
There are many types of probiotics, so do not start taking them without consulting your physician first. Your body may have different reactions to different bacteria. If you are taking probiotics and notice bloating, fever or abdominal discomfort, stop using them immediately. Many prescription medications interact with probiotics, specifically medications for the digestive system. These can alter how the medication works or can decrease the medications' effectiveness.
