Yeast is part of a normal and healthy gut flora, but if yeast overgrows, it can cause many health problems. The most common yeast that can overgrow in your intestinal tract is called "candida" and can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, rashes, acne, white coating on your tongue and intense cravings for alcohols, sugars and starches. You cannot completely remove yeast from your intestinal tract, but you can reduce the amount and get your symptoms under control by starving it from its favorite foods.
Avoid Grains and Starchy Vegetables
Yeast and candida thrive on sugar, which can be derived from the breakdown of carbohydrates. Eliminate starches from grains and starchy vegetables from your diet to prevent feeding the yeast in your intestinal tract. Stay away from breakfast cereals, breads, pasta, rice, oatmeal, pretzels, rice cakes, granola bars, potatoes, winter squash, corn, cookies, muffins and baked goods. Some candida diets allow the inclusion of some gluten-free grains, such as quinoa, buckwheat, rice, buckwheat and millet. Gluten-free grains and gluten-free foods are rich in carbohydrates. If you want to starve candida as rapidly as possible, avoiding all starches will give you the best and quickest results.
Candida and yeast in your gastrointestinal system can rapidly overgrow in the presence of sugars. Decreasing your total carbohydrate intake by cutting out grains, starchy vegetables as well as sugar-containing foods will help you remove the excess yeast living in your intestinal tract and causing your symptoms. Read ingredient lists and do not buy foods containing glucose, fructose, sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, fruit juice concentrates, dehydrated cane juice, maltodextrin, dextrose and dextrin. Avoid candies, sugary beverages, fruit juices and desserts. Keep your fruit consumption moderate.
Eat Vegetables, Protein and Fat
Most of your diet should be based on foods that contain few or no carbohydrates. These foods will nourish you and provide you with all the nutrients you need without feeding the yeast living in your intestinal tract. You can get protein from poultry, fish, seafood, meat, eggs and non-moldy cheese and fats from avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, butter, cream and fatty cuts of meat. Complete your meals with nonstarchy vegetables, such as leafy greens, onions, mushrooms, tomato, broccoli and cauliflower, which will become your main source of carbohydrates on your diet. For example, you can have eggs and sausages with roasted mushrooms and tomatoes for breakfast, a chicken, avocado and cheese salad for lunch and a broccoli and pork stir-fry for dinner.
Use Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a special fat that has antifungal properties and may help you eliminate candida and other problematic yeast from your digestive system. Bruce Fife, certified nutritionist and naturopath and author of the "Coconut Oil Miracle" recommends including 2 to 4 tablespoons of coconut oil a day. Start with small amounts and slowly increase your daily dose by using coconut oil to cook your vegetables and meat while following your anti-yeast diet.
