Basketball is one of the world's most popular team sports. In basketball, two teams with five players each compete to score points by throwing a ball into a hoop on a rectangular court. Each player is either a guard, forward or center, and plays an integral role in the game. Basketball is a great hobby or form of exercise for people of all ages and skill levels; the sport can teach you physical, mental and social skills.

The Game and Athleticism

Basketball teaches a player to stay within the established parameters of the game, such as how to play, what the rules are, positions, fouls, how to pass the ball, how to dribble and how to shoot the ball. Being physically fit is vitally important for basketball players. The sport is face-paced and physically demanding, and, as a result, teaches you to know your own physical abilities and endurance levels. To be a good basketball player, you must learn both the skills of the game and how to stay in peak physical condition.

Teamwork

Basketball is a team sport that is dependent on the cooperation of each member. Basketball teaches you to work with others to achieve a common goal: victory as a team. It teaches you to focus on the game and share the ball with others. It also helps you realize your personal strengths so you can effectively fulfill your role on the team. Basketball teaches you to trust your teammates.

Mental Fitness

A great basketball player learns to anticipate the plays and moves of the other team. In this sport, you learn to be proactive, not reactive. It teaches you awareness. To be a good basketball player, you must be prepared at all times. Basketball teaches mental preparation and discipline.

Perseverance

Good basketball players are good sports who know they will not win every game and are not sore losers. The game teaches you to learn from your defeats and use that knowledge to improve. Basketball teaches a positive attitude, dedication and a determination never to give up. Many famous basketball players have learned that they can miss shots and lose games and still be very successful.
