The S curve is an elementary snowboarding maneuver that involves connecting your heel side and toe side carves. When performed correctly, you'll create an S-shaped pattern across the snowboarding slope. Practicing the S curve will help to improve your turning efficiency and edge awareness. ABC-of-Snowboarding recommends using a gradual slope that features a groomed terrain when learning this essential technique. Riding a snowboard that has a centered stance will allow you to master the S curve with ease.
Step 1
Lower your snowboard onto the ground at the apex of a mellow slope. Tighten the binding straps to secure your boots in place. Ride forward with your non-dominant foot in the lead.
Step 2
Bend your knees as you reach a comfortable momentum. Hold your arms parallel to the ground to improve the stability of your snowboarding stance. Shift your body weight onto your heels to initiate the S curve.
Step 3
Push down to ensure the heel edge of your board penetrates the snow. Hold your shoulders parallel to the snowboard deck while executing the first half of the S curve. Lean onto your toes as you begin to lose speed.
Step 4
Rotate your head and torso in the direction of the turn as you traverse the mountain slope. Elevate your front foot slightly to avoid catching an edge.
Step 5
Practice the individual movements of the S curve until you can perform the maneuver consistently.
