Pain on the right side of your abdomen can be due a variety of issues, but in many cases, exercise-related transient abdominal pain, commonly referred to as side stitches, is to blame. Side stitches can be prevented by taking measures before and during your workout in most instances; however, if the pain is severe or occurs consistently during your workout, consult a doctor to rule out an injury or medical disorder.

Side Stitches

Side stitches, also referred to as stitches, are felt as a pulling sensation or dull ache if they are mild and as a sharp, stabbing pain in more severe cases. Stitches occur most frequently on the right side of the body, just under the ribs, but they can strike the left side or both sides simultaneously. The cause of stitches is not clear, but dehydration, working out on a full stomach, breathing erratically and not being physically fit are all contributing factors.

Treatment

Treat stitches as soon as they occur by stopping all activity and grabbing the affected area. Either massage or put pressure on the affected area until the stitch goes away. Lean forward at the waist to take pressure off the area. Focus on your breathing, pushing your abdomen out while inhaling and relaxing it during the exhale. Drink small sips of water to hydrate yourself. If it's painful when you grab the affected area or self-care measures don't eliminate the pain, seek medical attention.

Prevention

To prevent stitches, avoid eating a full meal fewer than two hours before working out and stay hydrated by taking small sips of water before and during exercise. Avoid fully hydrating until after your workout is over. Focus on building your core muscles — the muscles of your abdomen and back — by performing strength-building exercises. Warm up and stretch your midsection before working out. Take smooth, even breaths while working out and pace yourself to avoid fatigue.

Considerations

Stitches are a common cause of right-side abdominal pain during a workout, but injury, muscle cramps, intestinal disorders and problems with your organs, particularly your gall bladder or kidneys, can cause similar symptoms. While stitches and cramps dissipate fairly quickly, other types of pain, particularly pain from injury, tend to linger or become worse with movement. If this is the case, consult your doctor. If the pain is particularly severe or accompanied by fever, vomiting or nausea, seek immediate medical attention.
