When unpacking a new snowboarding deck, you'll notice the sharpened design of the metallic edges. While these pristine edges will offer increased turning efficiency on groomed slopes, they may catch while sliding across handrails and funboxes. Dressing the edges of your snowboard, commonly referred to as detuning, will help to prevent painful falls and slide -outs during slope style tricks. After unsheathing a new snowboarding deck, Transworld Snowboarding recommends dressing the edges with a metallic file.
Step 1
Lower your snowboard sideways into the clamp of a repair stand. Rotate the clamp lever clockwise to secure your snowboard in place. Hold the file against the top edge of the snowboard at a 45-degree angle.
Step 2
Push the file in a smooth, rhythmic motion along the entire edge of your new snowboard deck. Rub the file along the contact points of your snowboard's nose and tail. Repeat the process until the top edge of your snowboard has a rounded shape.
Step 3
Loosen the jaws of the clamp and remove your snowboard. Flip your snowboard to gain access to the opposing edge of the deck. Lower your snowboard back into the clamp and repeat the grinding process with the metallic file.
Step 4
Remove your snowboard deck from the repair stand after dressing both of the elongated edges. Rub a gummy stone around the entire circumference of your snowboard deck to smooth the edges further. Wipe away any shards of fiberglass with a soft cotton rag.
