Hiking is a way to combine your love of the outdoors with your need for exercise, and can be done all year long, as long as you follow safety precautions. Hiking in the winter may be more challenging due to freezing temperatures, snow and ice. One danger of hiking in cold weather is frostbite, and another is falling due to slippery conditions. Wearing the correct footwear while hiking can help you to stay safe and warm and prevent needless injury.
Step 1
Apply moleskin patches to any areas of your feet that are irritated or that tend to rub against your hiking boots. This can help prevent blisters.
Step 2
Put on thin socks that wick away sweat. Avoid cotton socks, because they tend to hold onto moisture. Instead, look for socks containing a moisture-wicking fabric such as polypropylene. This will help keep your feet dry, which can prevent discomfort as well as frostbite.
Step 3
Put on a pair of wool socks over the moisture-wicking socks. Wool helps retain heat and will trap warm air next to your feet. Look for thin socks, not bulky ones.
Step 4
Wear shoes that will support your feet while keeping them protected from the elements. Ankle-high boots give support while navigating areas that might be slippery due to ice or snow. If it is cold but not icy or snowy, and you are not hiking a challenging trail, lower-cut hiking boots or walking shoes may be more comfortable.
Step 5
Carry extra moleskin, synthetic socks and wool socks with you in case the ones you are wearing get wet. Check for wet socks periodically and change them immediately to prevent frostbite.
