When the weather is not conducive to cycling outdoors, you bring your workout indoors. As with most exercises, you have many options when deciding how to cycle indoors. Indoor cycling bikes, such as the ones used for group cycling classes, are set up and ready for your use. You simply adjust the height of the bike seat and the handlebars and perform your workout. If you choose to bring your outdoor bike indoors, cycle trainers vary by the type of resistance these training tools provide. A magnetic resistance trainer adjusts the tension by the placement of magnets against your back wheel. A fluid trainer also supports your back wheel and creates tension when you pedal. A roller trainer supports both wheels for a more road-like feel.

Step 1

Turn the resistance knob to the right when using an indoor cycling bike to increase the tension on the flywheel. Begin with a slight turn of the knob, approximately one-fourth of a turn. Increase the number of turns to increase the tension.

Step 2

Attach the remote for your magnetic resistance trainer to the handlebars of your bike. Turn the knob to the right to bring the magnets closer together and increase your resistance.

Step 3

Increase your pedal pace when cycling on a fluid trainer. Pedal quicker and with more force to create fluid resistance and more tension to simulate a road ride.

Step 4

Shift into a higher gear on your bicycle when cycling on a roller trainer to increase your resistance.
