Determining your lead foot is an essential part of the learning process. In snowboarding, your lead foot functions as the steering wheel while your back foot provides increased stability during turns and maneuvers. Most snowboarders prefer to place their nondominant foot in the lead position. If you prefer to ride with your left foot in the lead, you have a regular riding stance. According to the Snow Professor, an easy way to determine your lead foot for snowboarding involves sliding across a wooden floor in your socks.
Step 1
Insert your feet into a pair of thick socks to avoid getting splinters during the sliding test. Stand at the edge of the wood floor with your back against the wall. Run a few steps to increase your forward momentum.
Step 2
Extend one of your feet forward as you begin to slide. Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle to avoid losing balance. Hold your arms parallel to the floor to increase the stability of your sliding stance.
Step 3
Lower your eyes to the floor to examine the position of your feet. Straighten your legs as you begin to lose momentum. Choose the foot you extended forward to act as your lead foot for snowboarding.
