The front slip is an effective training exercise that enables you to get comfortable using the toe edge of your snowboard. You may feel intimidated by the front slip at first because it requires you to keep your backside facing down the mountain slope. However, using the proper technique can help to prevent you from losing balance throughout the learning process. The ABC-of-Snowboarding website recommends learning the front slip on a moderate slope to maintain a comfortable speed.
Step 1
Lower your snowboard onto the ground in a horizontal position with the toe edge pointing up the slope. Dig the toe edge into the snow to prevent your board from sliding down the mountain. Place your boots inside the snowboard bindings and tighten the retention straps.
Step 2
Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle to lower your center of gravity. Hold your arms parallel to the ground to increase the stability of your snowboarding stance. Lean back slowly to begin the front slip.
Step 3
Glance over your shoulder as the snowboard begins to slide down the slope. Shift your body weight forward as you reach a comfortable speed.
Step 4
Dig the toe edge of your snowboard into the ground to complete the front slip.
Step 5
Repeat this training exercise until you reach the bottom of the snowboarding slope.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep your shoulders parallel with the snowboard throughout the technique. Practice the front slip for a few minutes each day to improve your edge awareness.
