Climbing in the backcountry gives you the opportunity to spend time in the great outdoors while having a thrilling experience. Before you head out on a climbing trip, you must make sure all your gear and equipment is organized and ready to go. One of the most essential components of preparation is packing a climbing backpack. The proper care and placement of your gear and equipment involves a systematic approach to make life easier on the trail.
Step 1
Purchase a climbing backpack that matches the demands of the climbing trip. For example, multiday trips or winter trips require additional gear and a larger backpack. As a general rule, climbing packs range from about 40 to 50 liters. The pack should have a narrow profile and fit your torso properly.
Step 2
Organize the gear and equipment that will go in the backpack. The specific equipment depends on the location, time of year and type of climbing. Your overall selection of gear and equipment affects how you will pack the backpack.
Step 3
Pack the bottom of the backpack with gear you won’t immediately need throughout the day. This gear includes additional clothing, sleeping bag and other camp items.
Step 4
Fill the middle of the pack with specific climbing gear. Start by coiling your climbing rope and then stack your protective climbing gear such as cams, nuts and chocks on top. You can also place your headlamp, gloves and rain jacket in the middle of the pack.
Step 5
Place your harness, chalk bag and helmet in the top of the backpack. This allows you to easily access these items when you are ready to start climbing. Additional gear that can be packed at the top includes athletic tape, gloves, food, carabiners and a first-aid kit.
Step 6
Move your gear and equipment around to suit your personal preference and pack weight. For example, you may have to place your tent or climbing equipment in different areas so the pack is balanced.
