During much of a football game, the two teams scramble to get the pigskin over to their opponents' section of the playing field. Among the many techniques used by players to accomplish this, one of the most important is throwing or passing the football over long distances. The ball is thrown with one hand, but the other hand is used to stabilize the ball in the windup and placed on top. Keeping the hands in position during a throw is fairly simple to accomplish once the process of a windup is understood.

Step 1

Determine which hand is your throwing hand. Your throwing hand will grip the ball and the other hand will rest on top.

Step 2

Grip the ball by placing your throwing hand near the center or end of the ball. Players with larger hands should hold the ball closer to the center. Those with smaller hands should grip toward the end of the ball. Positioning your hand this way will add control of the ball for a better grip. Your thumb should sit parallel to the middle finger, which should be resting on one of the laces. Leave a gap between the skin connecting the thumb and index finger and the ball, which will place more grip power on the fingers. Place the other hand on the top center of the ball as soon as a firm grip is established.

Step 3

Assume a throwing position by lining up your secure or planted foot with the receiver of the pass. Hold the ball with both hands in place while winding back to throw the ball. Release the hand on top of the ball so only the throwing hand and arm begin to move forward to throw the ball.
