If your child is one of the roughly 30 percent of children who are overweight or obese as of 2011, you may be wondering what you can do to help your child shed excess pounds and develop a healthier body. The first step is to take your child to see her doctor so he can recommend a healthy weight and provide tips that will help your child lose weight safely. Once your child has received the go-ahead, encourage her while changing your own lifestyle habits to get healthy together. While your child cannot lose weight around her thighs and buttocks only, you can introduce specific exercises that target her thighs and buttocks if these are areas she would like to improve. She will likely begin to see results in two or three weeks.

Step 1

Teach your child exercises that target his thighs and buttocks to help turn fat into muscle and to tone these areas more quickly. Lunges, climbing stairs and marching in place will target these areas.

Step 2

Exercise with your child to target the muscles in her thighs and buttocks. Take a bike ride together, which is effective for both of these muscle groups. Resistance bands may have a similar toning effect. Kicking a soccer ball back and forth is also an effective way to burn calories, as well as tone the thighs and buttocks.

Step 3

Serve a variety of low-calorie and fresh foods. Offer your child fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. These foods are nutritious and also help satisfy your child's hunger so she is able to take in fewer calories, which will help her shed pounds all over, including around her thighs and buttocks.

Step 4

Restrict high-calorie and unhealthy foods from your child's diet. Limit how many sugary foods your child eats as well because they are often high in calories but low in nutritional value. Fast food, fried foods, baked goods and snacks such as potato chips should also be limited. As your child takes in fewer calories, he will begin to lose weight all over his body, including around his thighs and buttocks.

Tips and Warnings

  • Encourage your child to make goals for himself. Allow him a special reward, such as a new outfit or a movie night, when he reaches his goal. Set a goal for yourself and form a team with your child. You can offer each other support and encouragement. Teach your child to start small. She will not be able to lose all the weight from her thighs and buttocks overnight, so praise small goals, inspiring her to keep going.
  • Do not allow your child to lose weight without the supervision of a doctor.
