1. Know it Might Be Muscular
Many cases of burning neck pain are associated with soft tissue damage, such as muscles, ligaments and tendons. Trauma to the neck or sudden, quick movements can cause these tissues to become irritated and inflamed, which results in a localized burning or aching sensation. Often, the skin around the affected area is warm to the touch, which is a good indication that the tissues are working to repair themselves. Try using an ice pack to reduce the swelling, or take an anti-inflammatory. Provided the damage is not extensive, the burning should resolve once the area heals.
2. It Might Also Be the Result of Repetitive Strain
If you weren't in an accident, you may still have soft tissue damage. Think about the activities you do on a daily basis. Do you carry a heavy bag on one shoulder? Do you hold your child on one side? Do you cradle the phone between your neck and shoulder? Repetitive movements such as these can cause inflammation or even damage to soft tissues over time, which can eventually result in burning sensations in the neck. If this sounds familiar, try changing your habits to see if it makes a difference over time.
3. You Could Have Slipped or Have a Bulging Disc
Trauma and strain can damage more than just soft tissues; they can also damage the cervical spine. Burning neck pain that throbs or radiates down the arm may indicate disc damage between the vertebrae in your neck. A disc that is bulging or ruptured causes pressure one the nerves that exit the spinal column at each level, which can cause localized burning and radiating pain. Your doctor may order an MRI or X-ray to determine if there are any such abnormalities in your spine.
4. With Certain Symptons You Need to Seek Medical Attention Immediately
Burning in the neck can be an early symptom of head injury or meningitis. While these are rare conditions, they are serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room due to their life-threatening status. If, in addition to your burning neck pain, you are vomiting, have an unexplained rash or fever, or are drowsy and confused, you need to see a doctor right away. Don't call your family physician this time. You need to go to the emergency room.
5. Keep in Mind That If Left Untreated, It Can Lead to Abnormal Posture
Even simple cases of a burning sensation that lasts for a few days can have long lasting consequences. Often, if one side of the neck is uncomfortable, it is favored for the opposite side. While this might feel better temporarily, if it persists it can lead to abnormal posture. If you have recently experienced burning neck pain, have a look in the mirror and check your neck alignment. If you are unable to straighten it without pain, ask your doctor to refer you to a physical or sports therapist.
