When it comes to weight loss there is no shortage of products, programs and plans that claim to be the best at shedding unwanted weight. However, it is not the form of exercise that matters but the intensity and frequency of your exercise sessions. Walking outdoors or on a treadmill are both effective if approached the right way.
Weight Loss Exercise
The best type of exercise for weight loss is aerobic exercise, which is any activity that works your large muscle groups, such as walking, dancing, swimming and biking. There is not one type of aerobic activity that is better than another, however it is important to choose one that you enjoy and will stick with long term. Since one pound is equal to 3,500 calories, you need to exercise hard enough to burn off 500 calories every day to lose one pound per week, if you make no changes to your diet.
Intensity Level
Losing weight means working out at a moderate to vigorous level for 30 to 60 minutes every day. The goal is to raise your heart rate to between 60 percent and 80 percent of your maximum heart rate and keep it there during your workout, no matter what form of exercise you do. Walking or running either on a treadmill or outside can help. To lose weight and keep it off, aim to walk for at least one hour every day, suggests registered dietician Natalie Digate Muth, in an article for the American Council on Exercise.
Treadmill Benefits
You may prefer a treadmill for weight loss if you find it hard to push yourself to walk fast enough when outdoors. You can set the treadmill at a speed that is high enough to elevate your heart rate. For some people, the constant speed of the treadmill makes them walk faster then they would outside. You can find treadmills with workout routines programmed into them to help vary your routine. Some models can be hooked up to your TV or computer, and there are programs that take you on a guided walk in various areas of the world or in natural surroundings. These programs may hold your interest and make you work harder then walking outside, which in turn can help you burn more calories.
Benefits of Walking
Walking outside may be a better option of you do not like machines, do not want to join a gym or if you cannot fit a treadmill in your house. Walking outside can help you lose just as much weight as using a treadmill, as long as your pace is brisk enough. Vary your workout by alternating walking at fast and slow speeds. You can add in hills, walking poles or walk on sand or in the water if you are near a beach to increase the intensity level. Wearing a heart rate monitor can help you know that you are at the right intensity level no matter what form of exercise you choose, and some monitors also tell you how many calories you are burning.
