Living alone can make it easier for you to get in shape. When you live alone, you can fill your home with healthy foods and other items that are conducive to weight loss without needing to consult anyone else. Multiple studies have shown that people lose more weight and stick to their fitness plans more effectively when they have support from others; involving friends or family in your fitness plan can make it more successful.

Step 1

Hang inspirational signs all around your home. Hang pictures of celebrities with your ideal body on the refrigerator and tape signs with motivational sayings like “I can do it!” on your doors.

Step 2

Cook large batches of healthy meals on the weekends. Cook meals that are easy to freeze, like vegetable soup and lasagna that’s packed with roasted vegetables. Divide the meals into single-serving plastic containers to store in the freezer. Reheat one container for lunch and dinner each day, adding a salad or fresh fruit as a side.

Step 3

Buy low-calorie, single-serving packaged foods for the days when you want something different. Buy cans of low-sodium soup, frozen vegetable dishes and single-serving, low-calorie pasta dinners.

Step 4

Work out in your living room. With no one else around, you don’t have to worry about being embarrassed. Borrow fitness DVDs from the library or buy several to keep on hand. Close your curtains, put on your most comfortable fitness clothes and follow along with the DVDs.

Step 5

Join fitness groups or classes. These classes give your workout routine some structure; they give you a chance to meet new friends and potential dates. Sign up for a weekly yoga or indoor cycling class at your gym. Sign up for ballroom dancing or adult karate lessons.

Step 6

Make fitness dates with friends. Ask a friend to meet you at a park or track to walk or run. Agree on a regular meeting time, such as every Monday and Wednesday at noon. Knowing someone’s waiting for you makes it harder to put off exercising.
