Many diet aids are classified as dietary supplements and lack strict control and oversight. While many of the ingredients in the diet aids Xenadrine Efx and Xenadrine Nrg are safe individually, in combination they may pose a health risk for some dieters. Talk with your physician before you take any weight loss supplements -- especially if you have high blood pressure or other forms of cardiovascular disease.
Product Availability
Earlier Xenadrine brand weight loss supplements were taken off the market and reformulated after the Food and Drug Administration banned the production and sale of ephedrine and herbal ephedra-containing dietary supplements. Xenadrine Efx was created as an ephedra-free weight loss aid. Xenadrine Nrg was to be an ephedra-free diet aid, stimulant and energy booster. While neither Xenadrine Efx nor Xenadrine Nrg are currently being manufactured, unsold stock of each may still be available.
Shared Ingredients
Xenadrine Efx and Xenadrine Nrg have many ingredients in common. Both contain the amino acids L-tyrosine and L-theonine. Your body converts L-tyrosine into the neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine. In Efx, the L-tyrosine and L-theonine are labeled as Proprietary Thermodyne Complex. In Nrg, the same chemicals are called the "Amino Acid Complex Proprietary Blend."
Both products contain chemicals which may speed up your metabolism. Norambrolide – some sources do not list this ingredient in Efx – is a registered trademark for "fermented salvia sclarea extract." Chemicals in salvia sclarea extract are known to affect the metabolism in animals. Efx and Nrg each contain a family of chemicals known collectively as methylxanthines. Caffeine, theobromine and theophylline are all methylxanthines with mild stimulant properties. Caffeine is present in both products in the form of yerba mate, cocoa, guarana and green tea extracts.
Unique Efx Ingredients
Xenadrine Efx contains antioxidants from grape seed extract and a proprietary blend of fisetin and quercetin called "IsothermTM." Other nutrients include magnesium and vitamins C, B6 and pantothenic acid. DMAE, or 2-dimethylaminoethanolis, is added to lift your mood and alertness level. Also included is a cocoa extract called "SeroproTM," which contains the mild stimulants phenylethylamine, tyramine and theobromine.
Finally, Efx contains the herbs ginger root and bitter orange. Bitter orange contains synephrine – a natural stimulant similar chemically and pharmacologically to ephedrine. Bitter orange may carry the same health risks as ephedra. In a 2006 study published in "The Annals of Pharmacotherapy," researchers found that healthy adults experienced a rise in heart rate, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure for a period of five hours following a single dose of bitter orange extract.
Unique Nrg Ingredients
Nrg has a special mix of methylxanthins labeled "Proprietary Thermoxanthin Blend." Nrg contains the methylxanthins theobroma from cocoa seed and caffeine from green coffee bean extract. Nrg also contains "naturally infused caffeine" and vitamin B12.
