Without weekday commitments such as work and school, families are often able to spend more time preparing breakfast on the weekends. Other families need quick yet nutritious weekend breakfast ideas to accommodate all of the activities crammed into Saturday and Sunday. No matter how busy your weekend, preparing a healthful breakfast helps you avoid reaching for a box of doughnuts or eating a greasy breakfast at a restaurant.

Busy Weekend Breakfast

If your weekend involves running errands and attending events, find your family's favorite healthy on-the-go breakfast options that you are able to prepare quickly. Fruit is a nutritious ingredient to incorporate into quick breakfasts. Whole fruit, fruit smoothies or fruit salads work well at breakfast. If you don't want to mess with the blender, mix your favorite fruit chunks into plain yogurt with a drizzle of yogurt. Keep low-sugar instant oatmeal in the house for a hot quick breakfast on a busy weekend. If you have time to scramble eggs, make yourself a breakfast burrito to go. Add leftover roasted vegetables, a sprinkle of low-fat cheese and salsa to round out the burrito. Fold it up and wrap it in foil for a portable breakfast.

Sit-down Breakfast

Get the whole family involved in cooking a sit-down breakfast on the weekends. Cooking together starts your weekend off with a hearty breakfast and some bonding time. Let the kids help you plan out your sit-down breakfasts for the weekend. Ideas include whole-grain homemade waffles, breakfast pizza or a breakfast casserole made with low-fat ingredients like egg whites, vegetables and turkey bacon.

Brunch Buffet

Many restaurants feature expensive brunch buffets on the weekends, but they often include high-fat foods. Make your own mini brunch buffet at home for a nutritious first meal of the day on the weekend. Serve salmon the night before and use the leftovers for brunch. Use whole-grain English muffins for a healthier egg sandwich. Scramble egg whites and saute vegetables to put inside the sandwiches. Low-fat muffins, yogurt, fresh fruit, low-fat quiche and roasted meats also work well on the weekend brunch buffet.

Tips

Keep ingredients on hand for both on-the-go and sit-down breakfasts. Many times you know how busy your weekend will be before it starts, but other times plans change at the last minute. By keeping a variety of ingredients on hand you are able to adapt your breakfast plans without making a trip to the store.
