Chamomile comes in teas and tinctures and can be found at most stores.
Kava Kava
Kava kava, which is also known as piper methysticum, is part of the pepper family. Michael Murray states in his book "Natural Alternative to Prozac" that one of kava kava's chemical components is kavalactones, which can increase neurotransmitter activity in the brain. He states that these kavalactones that are found in kava kava can decrease anxiety because it may stimulate the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitters, and GABA can produce a positive mood and a sense of calmness. It can also help with sleep. Kava can be taken in capsules, tinctures, or teas.
Garlic
In the book "The Complete Guide to Vitamins, Herbs and Supplements," author Winifred Conkling writes that garlic can encourage the release of serotonin and other brain chemicals that can help with mood and anxiety. She further states that high levels of serotonin can have a tranquilizing effect and help calm and relax the nerves. Garlic can be taken in capsules or fresh cloves.
Skullcap
Skullcap is a powerful medicinal herb that can be helpful in treating anxiety along with stress and tension. It can also be taken to aid in sleep. Because it contains compounds that help with the nervous system, it is an ideal alternative herb to use for alleviating the symptoms of anxiety.
