Moving a toddler from a crib to a bed is a huge move in the life of any parent. Their tiny baby is growing and the move usually comes between the age of 1 1/2 and 3 1/2. There is no set time for it to happen, but when your child is not getting restful sleep in the crib or has physically outgrown it, it's the time to get the child into a bed. It is just one more step in the growth and development of your youngster.
Step 1
If you notice that your toddler is standing on the mattress in his crib and is attempting to climb out of it, it is time to transition him to a bed. He may not be big enough to get his leg over the top, but it is better to move your child from the crib to the bed before he finally gets that leg over and falls out of the crib.
Step 2
Find a small bed for your youngster. If your toddler is 2 1/2 or younger, he will likely get "lost" in a full-size single bed. Smaller beds may be more comfortable for your child and give you as a parent a greater feeling of security. Toddler beds are usually lower to the ground and that helps lessen the fear of falling.
Step 3
Put one or two guards up on the sides of your toddler's bed. If one of the sides is against the wall, you will only need one guard. The guards are a light netting and will prevent an active child from rolling out of the bed while sleeping.
Step 4
Lie with your child in the bed at night before she goes to sleep. Bedtime is a wonderful opportunity to bond with your child. You can read a book, tell a story or listen to music together. If you sense any fear or apprehension from your child because of her new environment, having the opportunity to have you next to her for 15 minutes or so will help make that adjustment much smoother.
