The Gwen Shamblin Diet

Gwen Shamblin is a Christian, non-fiction author and worship leader of the Remnant Fellowship Church. Shamblin proposes a weight loss method that combines a traditional weight loss program with Christianity. Shamlin authored the book “Weigh Down Diet,” first published in 1997. The diet advises you to use spirituality to avoid overeating. Shamblin is not a trained dietician or medical professional, and clinical research does not support her diet program. You should speak to a medical professional before starting any diet program.

The Weigh Down Approach

According to Gwen Shamblin, you have two empty, needing-to-be-fed holes in your body -- the stomach and the heart. Shamblin states that the emptiness in your heart represents a figurative need. All of your “deep-down feelings” result from this emptiness. Shamblin then proposes that to satisfy your deep-down feelings, needs and desires, you turn to food and subsequently overload your stomach. Shablin recommends three steps to fight overeating and therefore, to lose weight.

Three Steps

Shamblin proposes a three-step plan to fill the emptiness in your heart and re-educate your stomach to recognize and control hunger. The first step involves eating only when your stomach is truly hungry. The second step involves developing a relationship with God to feed and nourish your soul. The final step requires you to relearn how to recognize your different hunger urges to avoid confusing them.

How is Weight Lost?

Shamblin explains that once you stop turning to food for sensual indulgence, escape, comfort or other tranquilizing effect, you will stop overheating and lose weight. Shamblin further explains that the weight loss ultimately results from implementing a regular eating schedule that only allows you to eat when you are truly hungry. Specifically, Shamlin’s diet requires you to eat one-half to one-third of what you currently eat. Shamlin’s diet does not require you to measure the food or count calories because you will use your stomach as a guide. Additionally, Shamblin’s diet does not require you to eat specific foods or limit the types of foods you eat.

Weigh Down Basics

Gwen Shmablin advises you to take an introductory online class before attempting this diet. This introductory online class is an intensive program that lasts six weeks. The class focuses on repetition of the basics and developing a personalized diet program. Through this class, Shamblin affirms that you will learn how to stop mindless eating. You can take this class if you are new to Weigh Down or if you want a refresher course on the basic principles of this program.
