Physical activity is important for all children to participate in. It increases the heart rate, improves heart health and combats obesity in children. Getting kids to participate in some type of physical activity helps them to expend energy that has been building throughout the day so that they can focus better. There are several different activities available for both indoor and outdoor play as well as for the physically and mentally challenged child.
Indoors
On rainy days or days that are too hot or too cold to play outside, there are several different options for physical activity. The Public Broadcasting System (PBS) offers several different games on its website for children who are locked inside the house to play. One of these is called Popper Stopper and involves tying a balloon to several different kids' legs and then letting the kids try to pop each other's balloons. Although this activity can be done indoors, it still needs a little space to run around. Therefore, clearing furniture out of a room or using a basement is a good idea.
Another popular and historical activity for indoors is musical chairs. This activity can be very fun for children to play as a well as help raise their heart rates. In addition, computerized games that are interactive and involve physical activity and individual movement, such as the Nintendo Wii, are popular.
Outdoors
There are various games and activities that children can play outdoors. Some of the more favorite ones are sports related. Soccer, football, baseball, tennis and even golf can be fun for kids to play and can be physically challenging activities. Another game that can be physically challenging is the popular game of dodge ball. Children love to run around trying to hit one another with a ball to get them out. In addition, you can always take your child to the local park and let her run and play. Children both young and old seem to love going to the park.
Another popular summertime activity is swimming. Children love to go to a swimming pool or even a water park to play. Any of these outdoor activities can help you provide your child with plenty of exercise.
Disability
According to CureOurChildren.org, handicapped and disabled children can also benefit from physical activity, and most any activity can be modified for their limitations. Although they may not be able to run and play as other children, they can still participate in games that are physical in nature. Of course, children who are mentally challenged can physically participate in most athletic games if only given the chance, but the coach may have to work with them a little more so that they fully understand the game.
Children who are more physically challenged, such as those in wheelchairs or leg braces, can sometimes use their upper bodies to throw balls, hit baseballs, ride horses or even go swimming. In addition, some older children like to do weightlifting. These children do not have to be excluded from activities just because they are somewhat mentally or physically different.
