Assi Mixed Grains are a blend of beans, rice and other grains packaged and sold by Assi Brands, a grocery company specializing in Korean cuisine and culture. The Assi blend includes barley, millet, black beans and black sweet rice and is available from Asian food markets in three- and five-pound bags. Because the product is a blend and each component cooks differently, you do not cook this product the same as you would standard rice.
Step 1
Add 1 cup of Assi mixed grains to a large pot. Pour four cups of tepid water over the grains.
Step 2
Cover the pot and let the grains soak for at least five hours. Start the pot in the morning before you go to work or at night before bed.
Step 3
Drain the grains through a strainer. Put the pot on the stove and set it to medium.
Step 4
Add the grains to the heated pot. Pour enough water over the grains to cover them by one inch.
Step 5
Turn the burner to high and bring the grains to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water.
Step 6
Add one can of water chestnuts with syrup and a handful of dried, seedless dates, if desired. If the dates and chestnuts are too large, you can cut them into bite-sized pieces.
Step 7
Reduce the heat, cover the pot and let the grains simmer until they are tender and have absorbed all of the water.
