Unless the side effects from the antibiotic prevent you from working out, there’s no need to abstain from exercise during the treatment of facial cellulitis. Your level of physical activity shouldn’t alter the efficacy of the medication, so it’s really up to you whether you exercise or not. As with any medication, talk with a doctor to determine whether any physical activity restrictions apply to you.
Cellulitis
Before getting into the medications used to treat cellulitis, it’s important to at least touch on the condition itself. Cellulitis is best described as a bacterial infection of the skin. It often develops when bacteria enter through a crack in your skin, causing red, swollen patches to form that many be tender to the touch. Most of the time, cellulitis develops somewhere along the lower legs, but it may affect any area of the body, including the face.
Treatment
More often than not, treatment involves antibiotics. Your doctor will likely prescribe an antibiotic that’s effective in combating both streptococci and staphylococci — the two bacteria usually linked to the condition. A common antibiotic used is cephalexin, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. Although side effects are rare, they do occur.
Side Effects
Side effects from cephalexin most often involve the gastrointestinal tract. Some people can experience upset stomach, nausea and vomiting, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. If these symptoms manifest in you, they may prevent you from exercising, but physical activity isn’t known to trigger these side effects. You should be fine working out as normal, but talk with your doctor to clarify if another circumstance that may prevent you from exercising.
Warning
While rare, serious side effects can sometimes develop during the use of cephalexin. People have encountered sore throat, mouth sore, wheezing, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, vaginal infection, bruising and even an increased risk of bleeding. If any one of these symptoms develops, contact your doctor immediately. Another medication is necessary to treat the condition. Also, if exercise aggravates your condition, stop immediately.
