Fish oil is naturally present in various kinds of fish and is also available as a dietary supplement. While there are some possible side effects of taking fish oil, numbness in the hands and feet is not generally associated with the substance. Talk to a physician before you decide to take fish oil or if you are experiencing numbness in your extremities.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is a naturally occurring substance that contains omega-3 fatty acids, an acid known to be beneficial to humans. Fish oil has been shown to be effective for preventing high triglycerides, a substance that can build up in your body and lead to heart disease and diabetes. Fish oil may also be helpful in preventing or treating an array of other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, stroke, osteoporosis and depression, according to MedlinePlus, a service of the National Institutes of Health.

Numbness

Numbness in your hands or feet typically has a range of potential causes, though fish oil is not generally included as one of them. For example, Mayo Clinic.com reports that numbness in your hands can be caused by such factors as alcoholism, carpal tunnel syndrome, spinal cord injury, syphilis and a range of other diseases.

Fish Oil and Numbness

Fish oil and fish oil supplements are not associated with numbness in your extremities, according to Medline Plus. The substance is likely safe for most people, though it can lead to common side effects such as nausea, loose stool, rash and nosebleeds. Taking high doses of fish oil per day, more than 3 grams, is possibly unsafe and may increase the chance of bleeding, as it may prevent your blood from clotting.

Other Considerations

Although fish oil is not generally associated with numbness in the hands or feet, it may be possible that your body reacts differently to the substance than most other people's. Also, it is possible that fish oil supplements or the fish you eat has other substances present that may lead to numbness. If you're experiencing numbness after taking fish oil you should consult a physician to determine the cause of the symptoms.
