Wheatgrass juice is a juice made from an immature wheat plant. Some people believe that wheatgrass juice can cure a number of different diseases, including allergies, although research does not generally support these claims. Consult your physician before consuming wheat grass juice because of possible side effects.
Identification
Wheatgrass juice is a healthy food, containing antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals. It became popular in the 1960s when a woman claimed the juice helped to cure her ulcerative colitis. Wheatgrass juice is a good source of vitamins A, B, C and E. The juice also has calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. Wheat grass, like all green vegetables, contains chlorophyll. Some suggest that chlorophyll can help treat some diseases in humans although there is no evidence that this is true.
Benefits
Health food companies state that wheatgrass helps prevent diseases by increasing the amount of oxygen in your cells. Among its supposed benefits, wheatgrass juice improves various systems in your body, improves cognition, boosts your energy, eliminates toxins, improves immunity, and stops the growth of cancer. The research on wheatgrass juice is limited. Only two double-blind studies have investigated wheatgrass juice as a treatment. One study was flawed and the other study did not find any benefit of the treatment, according to New York University Langone Medical Center.
Allergies
Allergies, a disease of the immune system, occur when your body reacts to a specific substance or allergen. Types of allergies include seasonal allergies, food and drug allergies. Because of the large amounts of nutrients and antioxidants in wheatgrass juice, it may help boost immunity. Since allergies are a disease of the immune system, an improvement in your immune system may help prevent certain seasonal allergies. However, no valid scientific research has specifically looked at wheatgrass juice and allergies.
Dosage and Precautions
Generally, wheatgrass is considered safe, according to the Mayo Clinic. Because the juice is healthy, you may want to drink it along with any prescription or over-the-counter allergy medications. Do not drink wheatgrass juice if you notice any allergic reaction, such as hives or swelling. If you are allergic to wheat or grass, do not consume wheatgrass. You only need small quantities of wheatgrass juice for the nutritional benefits. Health food stores generally sell it in serving sizes of two to four ounces.
