Meditation and contemplation are both techniques used to find relaxation, spiritual peace and connection with a vast universe. Both of these states of consciousness allow you to concentrate on any personal issue in an environment of solitude. Numerous religions throughout history have practiced a version of meditation or contemplation as a means of personal enlightenment and inner peace. Although these two techniques are closely related, there is a distinct difference between the two.
Meditation
Meditation is a method of concentrating on a specific thing, thought or feeling. In meditation, your goal is to think of only one idea, and you work to wrap your entire being around that idea. All the while, your mind is calm and peaceful as you attempt to approach an understanding of -- and feel a oneness with -- the universe. Guided imagery -- having someone tell you to envision specific places and things while using your senses -- is an ideal method of meditating for the beginner.
Meditation Versus Contemplation
Contemplation is slightly different than meditation. When you are engrossed in a period of contemplation, you feel the entire universe -- and everything within -- inside yourself. You will not be concentrating on merely one idea, feeling or thought during contemplation because you will feel everything that the universe consists of at once.
Contemplation in Prayer
Contemplation in prayer can help you develop a closer relationship with a higher power or whomever you feel is your creator. In traditional prayer, you speak to a higher power verbally or in your mind. However, using contemplation as a type of prayer helps you feel that you are in the presence of your creator -- not necessarily communicating but simply enjoying being in the presence of the creator.
Benefits
Having a quiet place to reflect on your day and work through problems can have a positive impact on your mental health. If you are not using meditation or contemplation to feel closer to a specific spiritual being, either of these techniques can help relieve stress and bring peace to certain troublesome areas of your life. Additionally, either of these stress-relieving methods can help improve your concentration skills.
