Just as humans do, dogs require a mix of nutrients for their overall health. Many people who own pit bull terriers feed them a raw diet because they feel that the nutrient balance in commercial dog food is not based on a pit bull terrier's needs. A mix of raw red meat, fish and poultry combined with raw eggs and fruits and vegetables is a good way to ensure adequate nutrient intake. Introducing a raw diet slowly allows your dog's system to adapt and is best done under a veterinarian’s supervision.

Fat

Fat is a good source of energy for pit bull terriers because it is concentrated. Since dogs don't eat as often as humans, their meals need to contain enough fat to carry them through until their next meal. Offering bones with raw meat attached and raw muscle meat satisfies your pit bull terrier's appetite and fulfills his fat needs.

Protein

Meat, raw or cooked, is the best source of complete protein in a pit bull's diet. They need the amino acids that make up protein for energy and muscle strength. Some of these amino acids are essential nutrients, which means your dog must get them from his foods because his body doesn't produce them. Protein from raw meat also supports your pit bull terrier's skin and hair. However, too much protein can cause kidney damage in dogs, so be sure you don't overdo it; balance raw meat with raw fruits and vegetables and raw eggs.

Vitamins

Raw meat doesn't contain a high amount of vitamins, so your vet may recommend a supplement to cover your dog's needs. Adding raw fish to your dog's meal plan increases vitamin D intake. This nutrient is important for canines because is helps them absorb calcium, which keeps bones and teeth healthy and strong. Too much vitamin D can cause health problems, so be sure to balance raw fish intake with plenty of other options.

Minerals

Several minerals are important for your dog's health and are found in raw meats. This includes calcium and phosphorus. They are needed in the proper ratio to be effective for bone health. This is why a raw meat diet for pit bull terriers includes both raw muscle meat and raw meaty bones. The bones combined with the meat offer the correct amount of calcium and phosphorus. Raw meat is also a good source of zinc, which supports healthy skin and fur. The iron found in meat supports healthy red blood cells.
