The incentives to staying fit include better health and a toned physique. Being fit is one thing, but staying fit requires even more effort. Your life will inevitably change over time. You may start a family or switch from an active to sedentary job; you’ll certainly get older. Whatever your circumstances are now and however they may change, keeping the motivation to stay fit will require creativity, perseverance and knowledge.

Diet

When you’re fit, you may feel justified in eating higher-calorie meals. Although it’s true that physically active people need to consume more calories, what you eat is a factor in whether you stay fit. Consume a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains and lean meat. Carry healthy snacks like seeds and nuts to keep your energy up during the day, and try not to eat more than the number of calories you need to maintain your current weight. Keep abreast of the trends in healthy eating and experiment with new recipes that will excite your palate.

Exercise

Whatever form of exercise you engage in to stay fit, think about expanding your options. If you’re a runner, consider adding a discipline like yoga to your weekly program. If you’ve only ever practiced yoga to keep fit, then add strength training to your agenda. Muscle mass decreases as you age. What used to keep you fit may not be enough over time. Challenge your fitness level every so often by training different muscles groups.

Health

Keeping fit lowers your risk of cardiac events and helps manage your blood pressure. MayoClinic.com advises that regular exercise helps keep diabetes and some cancers at bay. Although staying fit can’t protect you from every disease, it can give your immune system a leg up.

Aging

Staying fit as you age means taking more time to perform warmups before and cooldowns after your routine to avoid injury. If you’re sidelined due a strain, sprain or break, you can’t exercise. As you age, it takes longer to come back from an injury. Aging also means that you may have to adjust your fitness routine over time. Spread your workouts over a whole week, spending at least 30 minutes a day exercising to stay fit.

Motivation

Staying fit means more than just displaying physical prowess; it means having mental endurance as well. Sticking to a fitness routine through all of life’s challenges and changes of fortune, good and bad, takes willpower. Recording your workouts and weight on a daily basis will not only inculcate the discipline it requires to stay fit but will be a constant reminder of your positive accomplishments.
