Affecting both young and old, blackheads are clogged pores that clutter up the appearance of the skin. Though the black discoloration may look like trapped dirt, it is actually dead skin cells, excess sebum and bacteria that have turned dark from exposure to the air. Prevention is a key factor in the war against blackheads -- stopping them before they ever have a chance to form. Doing so in a natural fashion is both healthy and surprisingly simple.

Hygiene

Keeping your skin clean by daily washing is an integral part of preventing blackheads by reducing the amount of bacteria on the skin. Choose a mild soap and wash your skin twice daily, morning and night. Not all face washes are the same, so taking the time to read the ingredients can pay off in the long run. Showering after sweaty workouts is also helpful, as sweat can carry bacteria across your skin and cause blackheads.

Makeup and Lotions

Be careful with anything that you apply to your skin, and opt for products that are noncomdogenic. Noncomdogenic products are water based rather than oil based and are lighter on the skin and less likely to clog your pores. Make sure to wash off all makeup, lotions and sunscreens at the end of the day before you go to bed. Remain aware of things that touch your face, such as your fingers and clothing. Your fingertips spread oils and can lead to creating blackheads. Keep your hair pulled back away from your skin, and wash your pillowcase at least weekly. Your pillowcase traps in oils from your skin and can redistribute them back onto your face.

Diet

Foods that contain vitamins A, B and C, as well as zinc and L-carotene, are extremely helpful for maintain healthy skin. Dark green leafy vegetables, fish, dairy and eggs are just a few foods that boast these essential vitamins and nutrients. Processed sugars and empty carbohydrates can set back your progress, so indulge your sweet tooth sparingly. Drink plenty of water each day and limit your caffeine intake. Talk to your doctor before making any radical changes to your diet.

Natural Ideas

Rather that opting for commercial acne products and topical creams, check out your pantry instead. Crushed orange peels or uncooked oatmeal mixed with warm water creates a simple and effective face mask to keep your skin from becoming too oily. Leave the homemade concoction on your skin for at least 15 minutes and use a soft, damp cloth to remove it. Try honey once or twice a week on your skin for 15 to 20 minutes to help keep it clean. Honey has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, making it safe and effective for skin care. Use honey in its purest form, avoiding unnatural flavors and fragrances.
