Para cress, also spelled paracress, is a plant that belongs to the Asteraceae – or daisy – family. Para cress originates from South America. In its native Brazil, para cress is used as a spice in cuisine. Maintaining both astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, para cress extract is sometimes applied topically to the skin to help soothe minor irritations.

Astringent

Para cress's medicinal applications are similar to those of witch hazel. Para cress, like witch hazel, contains tannic acid, also known as tannins. Tannic acid gives para cress its astringent properties. Astringents promote the drying of skin tissues. For this reason, astringents are often used to impede fluid discharge. Indeed, para cress extract is sometimes used in ointments designed to help treat insect bites, small wounds and hemorrhages.

Anti-Inflammatory

The astringent tannic acid and spilanthole oil in para cress might help promote the tightening and hardening of tissue. The tannic acid and spilanthole in para cress might help temporarily tighten inflammation of the veins, a condition known as phlebitis. The tightening effect of tannic acid might help reduce inflammation and help ease some of the pain and discomfort associated with vein inflammation. Additionally, the spilanthole in para cress might help reduce swelling and alleviate the discomfort caused by inflammation of nerves.

Anesthetic

Para cress contains alkamid, which contributes to the herb’s anesthetic quality. Due to its numbing capabilities, para cress is sometimes referred to as the toothache plant. Chewing on para cress might help alleviate the pain associated with a toothache by temporarily numbing the affected area. In general, para cress is safe to put in your mouth. In fact, in Brazil, para cress is a popular spice used in cooking.

Considerations

Keep in mind that para cress is considered an alternative method of treating common topical ailments. Consult your doctor before attempting to diagnose or treat any medical condition. More traditional methods of treating the ailments para cress is believed to help treat – such as the oozing of minor wounds and relief from a toothache – include applying peroxide or taking an anti-inflammatory over-the-counter medication such as aspirin.
