Acupressure is an ancient technique used to treat a variety of issues, using the same principles as acupuncture but without inserting needles. Couples can use acupressure in a variety of ways, including intimacy enhancement, according to Michael Reed Gach, author of "Acupressure for Lovers." Although acupressure is relatively simple and straightforward, it's advisable to consult a licensed practitioner to learn proper technique.

Acupressure

Acupressure originated in Asia more than 5,000 years ago, according to the Acupressure.com website. It is similar to acupuncture in that it uses the same points for stimulation. The points are located along lines that run along the body called meridians or channels. By applying pressure on the points, it helps to release tension, promote blood flow and move the subtle energy the Chinese refer to as qi — pronounced chee — through the body.

Intimacy

In addition to being used for healing, acupressure has also traditionally been used to stimulate sexual arousal between couples, according to Gach. Applying acupressure to specific points can help to stimulate libido, release tension and promote an intimacy with a partner's body through the power of touch, particularly when combined with massage. Although a variety of points are used in couples acupressure, the main points are on the abdomen, back and mid-line of the body.

Pregnancy

Being pregnant induces a variety of changes in a woman's body, not the least of which are pains, aches and fatigue. Having a partner to help support you is invaluable, and acupressure is often included in that support in traditional Chinese medicine. A partner can apply pressure on points to reduce pain, relax the body and reduce nausea. Caution should be exercised, however, because certain acupressure points can induce labor. Consult a certified and licensed acupressurist to learn more.

Couples Treatments

If you don't want to practice acupressure on your partner, many spas offer treatments for couples. However, make sure that the spa is licensed and the acupressurists are well trained, if you wish to go that route. You might also be able to find a workshop in your area, especially if you are looking to learn more about pregnancy-related acupressure for couples. Consult a licensed acupressurist to learn proper technique. Not all acupressurists specialize in couples, but a qualified practitioner can often make informed recommendations about where to go to learn more about the topic.
