Like many drugs, the antidepressant medication Celexa may negatively interact with various medications and over-the-counter products. Taking Celexa and calcium together does not seem to pose a problem from a safety standpoint. In some instances, however, you might consider taking your calcium supplement at a different time for other reasons. .

Interactions

According to Drugs.com, Celexa and calcium do not have any known interactions. Even so, it is important to talk to your doctor about all supplements you are using and whether you need to take certain ones separate from your medication.

Taking Supplements With or Without Food

Some supplements are better absorbed with food and some without. According to the physician-created site eMedTV, you can take Celexa with food or on an empty stomach. With the exception of calcium citrate -- which you can take with or without food -- most calcium supplements are better absorbed when taken with a meal, according to MayoClinic.com. If you take your Celexa on an empty stomach and you use calcium citrate, this will not affect calcium absorption. If you take other types of calcium supplements, you may want to take them at a separate time with a meal.

Time of Day

To maintain steady levels of the medication, take Celexa around the same time every day -- talk to your doctor about what time of day that should be. You can take calcium supplements any time of the day, so unless you take Celexa on an empty stomach and you use calcium supplements other than calcium citrate, you can take them together.

Considerations

If you plan on using any other supplements while taking Celexa, make sure to check with your doctor. Do not assume that because it is likely safe to take a calcium supplement, other supplements are probably safe, too. Nutrients naturally found in food can pose risks similar to drugs when you take them in supplement form. Supplements, including herbal supplements, can affect absorption and interact with substances in the drug.
