Pharmaceutical companies continue to create new medications to reduce asthma symptoms, reducing your need for an inhaler. However, these options can be scary due to the potential of side effects. This has led many people to rely on home remedies, like pineapple, ginger and aloe, for relief. While some of these remedies can aid in your treatment, others may exacerbate the problem. Always talk to your doctor before using alternative treatments for any medical condition.

Pineapple Extract

Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain that has anti-inflammatory properties that may help to reduce the effects of asthma. Although eating pineapple alone will not offer you a therapeutic dose of bromelain, pineapple extract can. However, Dr. Eric Secor of the University of Connecticut Health Center suggests that pineapple extract as a home remedy for asthma is most effective in mild cases and should not be used alone to treat the condition. Pineapple and bromelain can also cause an allergic reaction, which may trigger an asthma attack. Only consider taking pineapple extract after talking to your physician about potential risks and interactions.

Ginger

An animal study published in the December 2008 issue of “International Immunopharmacology” found that mice treated with ginger extract experienced reduced airway inflammation related to an allergic reaction. Ginger may have a similar result in humans and be helpful in treating asthma, although more studies are needed to make a definitive claim. The University of Maryland Medical Center warns that diabetics, people taking blood thinners, those with blood-clotting disorders, pregnant women and people with gallstones should consult a doctor before taking ginger due to potential complications.

Aloe Vera

Some people take aloe vera orally to treat asthma. However, little research is available on the topic of aloe vera’s effectiveness as a home remedy for anything other than psoriasis and constipation. MedlinePlus has concerns about the safety of aloe vera taken orally, noting that aloe may interact with other medications, both prescription and herbal. It can also cause stomach cramping and diarrhea.

Other Remedies

Ginkgo extract, butterbur, omega-3 fatty acids and dried ivy are other promising home remedies for asthma, according to MayoClinic.com. You may also find success in managing your asthma through breathing techniques, acupuncture or relaxation exercises. Discuss these alternative treatments with your doctor to find which method will work best for you or whether traditional medicine is still your best bet.
