Clomid, or clomiphene citrate, is a prescription medication that can help women who are infertile. Amino acids are nutrients that are essential for protein and energy metabolism and synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters. The prescription information for Clomid does not indicate whether you can or cannot take amino acids with the medication. A few studies demonstrate that certain amino acids taken with Clomid may help improve fertility. Consult your doctor about taking amino acids and Clomid.

Clomid

Clomid is a prescription drug, orally administered through tablets, that is indicated for treatment of ovary dysfunction in women seeking to become pregnant. The active pharmaceutical ingredient in Clomid is clomiphene citrate, a substance that induces ovulation. Successful pregnancy may result when coitus is properly timed with ovulation. Women should not use the medication if they have ovarian cysts or are already pregnant. Patients taking Clomid may experience vision impairment including seeing spots or flashes, ovary enlargement, abdominal pain, multiple pregnancies, birth defects, spontaneous abortion, anxiety, mood disorders and psychosis. No contraindications for use of Clomid and amino acids have been established.

Amino Acids

Amino acids are nutrients that play numerous roles in the body. Twenty amino acids are the building blocks of proteins; nine of these are essential and must be derived from foods, whereas the remaining 11 amino acids can be made in the body in adult humans. Certain amino acids, such as tryptophan and tyrosine, are precursors of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are chemical substances that communicate between nerve cells in the brain. Other types of amino acids stimulate the immune system and accelerate wound healing.

Cysteine

Cysteine is an amino acid your body converts into glutathione, an antioxidant that protects your cells and reduces your risk of heart disease and cancer. N-acetyl-L-cysteine is the form of cysteine taken as a supplement. Taking N-acetyl-L-cysteine in addition to clomiphene citrate is effective in increasing the rate of ovulation in polycystic ovary patients compared to taking clomiphene citrate alone, according to research by scientists at Mansoura University in Mansoura, Egypt, published in "Acta Obstetrica et Gynecologica Scandinavica" in 2007.

Carnitine

Taking L-carnitine with Clomid may improve fertility in men. L-carnitine, an amino acid made by another amino acid called L-lysine, plays a vital role in cellular metabolism of fat into energy. Low L-carnitine levels are associated with low sperm count and infertility, whereas increased L-carnitine intake from supplements is associated with increased sperm count and mobility. Scientists at the University of Medical Sciences in Kermanshah, Iran, found that taking Clomid and L-carnitine in combination is safe and effective in treating male infertility, according to research published in the summer edition of "Urology Journal" in 2010.
